自從來美國，就一直聽親朋好友在討論學區的好壞，為了讓小孩能上好學校，顯然學區是很多人關心的話題，一直不知道學區是用一般人口耳相傳的判斷來評斷，還是有一個客觀的標準依據。以前不來恩同事曾說過Cupertino學區很好，San Jose學區不好，後來在李大衛老婆Judy的告知，才曉得 "API " 這個關鍵字，在google的搜尋之下，終於找到 API 是 Academic Performance Index ( 學習成就指數) 。
稍微survey了API 網頁，可依各區或各校搜尋Elementary, Middle到High School的API分數，特別查了舊金山灣區東灣和南灣的各學區分數（District Report 2006 Base API），從北到南共13區，該學區平均API超過九百分的只有Cupertino和Los Altos，這兩區位於南灣，正因學區好氣候宜人，房價也特別貴，Single House都是百萬美金起跳，而東灣的Walnut Creek, San Rsmon, Dublin到Pleasanton，學區平均API約八百多分，然而矽谷San Jose這一帶的學區分數掉到七百多分，從灣區整體學區分數比較來看，房價和學區分數高低有種密不可分的正比關係。
我們曾經在San Ramon住過半年，那裡的環境優美，走在路上迎面而來的陌生人都會親切地打招呼，San Ramon的白人居民居多，不知道是否因為這樣，導致教育品質提高？兩個禮拜前，在San Ramon新開發區看model house，那裡離highway遠，要購物起碼要開20分，一棟兩層樓2000多呎的Single House要110萬起跳。
如果說San Ramon是鄉下地方，那麼San Jose就是不折不扣的都市，我們不住在Downtown，是鄰近Milpitas的郊區，靠近Highway必經之道，所以，每天總是有川流不息的車輛經過，在這裡看到亞洲人的面孔頻率變高，尤其是印度人，這裡有很多公寓、Townhose，相較之下，人一多空間變得很擁擠，不似San Ramon那樣開闊。很現實的是，想要住到好環境好學區的地方，就得有能力買房子付貸款，不然，就是花更貴的錢住公寓，我想很多人都是跟我們一樣，依現實經濟狀況而選擇居住地點。
有個朋友這麼說，在美國租或買房子，考慮學區是首要，但是，如果孩子還小，可以先選學區差一點房租較便宜的地區，等到過幾年，經濟能力更好一點了，再換到學區好的地區，這樣是很有道理，問題是萬事起頭難，現在灣區買個Townhose 都要四五十萬美金，等於是台幣千萬以上了，一個月貸款就要兩三千塊美金。所以，不光是在台北買房子難，在加州想要買房子更是難上加難阿。
